My recent journey to the Gathering in Del Mar, California provided me with some interesting and optimistic insights into the current state of estate and wealth transfer planning.  Over 125 attorneys, financial advisors, CPAs and charitable professionals gathered for two and a half days of professional education, networking and, dare I say, fun.

It is both refreshing and unusual to have a multi-disciplinary conference and the emphasis on collaboration and cooperation was abundant. Personally, I have believed and practiced for years as a member of a collaborator team on every high net worth family I’ve ever helped. I wouldn’t know how to have a successful engagement for the family otherwise. However, it’s not common practice, I’m told and so, this conference is elevated for that alone.

A number of fine speakers, again from all disciplines presented fine and interesting material. Highlights for me included a fine and thorough tax update from David Cahoone; Roy Williams of the Williams Group with his endless insights into the challenges of inherited wealth and how to help families prepare heirs; and a number of presentations on the challenges and solutions coming in the world of elder care.

Joe Strazzeri, Steve Mancini and David Cahoone all host with boundless energy and passion, highlighted by a charity ball that raised serious money for a local children’s hospital. Their commitment to the local community and their client base is evident every step of the way. The selection of a charitable beneficiary of the event is as thorough and thoughtful as the fine details of the entire program.

It would be impossible to believe that anyone went home not feeling that they received incredible value for their time (and money) spent.

Save the date for next year’s Gathering on February 25-26, 2016.
